Engagement Ring Settings
Engagement ring settings come in a variety of choices. The prong setting, also known as the claw setting is the most popular. It has 4 to 6 claws that cradle the diamond. The maximum amount of light is allowed to enter the stone from all angles. The stone then appears to be larger and more brilliant. It is the best choice for large diamonds. There are pointed, rounded, flat, and v shaped prong settings.
The Channel engagement ring setting places the stones into the band right next to each other without any metal separating them. The outer ridge of the metal is then fashioned to work over the edges of the stones. Channel engagement ring setting is most commonly used for wedding bands and anniversary bands. The Bar setting is similar to the Channel setting in that it is a circular band of diamonds that holds each stone in by a long thin bar that the two stones share. The bar setting gives a classic design a contemporary feel.
A Bezel engagement ring setting is created with a rim of metal completely holding the edge of the gem. The edges can be straight, scalloped, or molded into any shape that will accomodate the stone. The backs can be open or closed. The Bezel setting is not as common as other engagement ring settings.
The Gypsy ring setting is most commonly used for men’s jewelry. The band is a continuous piece of metal that gets thicker at the top. The stone is inserted in the middle where the top of the ring is shaped like a dome. This gives the setting a very smooth and clean look because there are not any prongs. The flat-top setting is similar to the gypsy setting as it’s band grows broader at the top where the faceted stone is then inserted into the ring. Metal chips hold the stone into place at the stone’s girdle. This also lends it to a more contemporary design.
If you are looking for a very contemporary look, you may select the tension engagement ring setting. The diamond is held in place simply by the pressure of the band’s metal. The metal is designed to "squeeze" the stone.
In an Illusion engagement ring setting, the metal is designed to surround the stone and usually has an interesting design. It is a more intricate setting than others. It makes the stone appear to be larger than it is.
The Cluster engagement ring setting makes a larger ring from many smaller stones. It has a larger stone surrounded by several smaller stones.
